This year we are following a study programme supplied by the Australian online U3A, entitled 'English poetry from Chaucer to Ted Hughes'. Here is a synopsis of the programme units:-

The origins of poetry and some of the earliest poetry available.

The parts that make up poetry as a whole

The poetry of Geoffrey Chaucer and his contribution to English literature. 

The poetry of the English Renaissance and at four Renaissance poets in detail

The Metaphysical poets of the 17th century

Three of England's greatest poets of the later part of the 17th century -– Milton, Dryden and Pope.

The poetry of Byron, Keats, Shelley, Wordsworth and Coleridge.

19th Century Poets -The Victorians - Browning, Tennyson & Hopkins

The major poets of the two world wars.

Poetry in the 20th century.
